Showing rhythm counts

Our “Rhythm counts” feature automatically displays rhythm counts above your music. You can quickly toggle them on and off.

This is handy for beginner students who are still learning to read music.

Activating rhythm counts

To display rhythm counts, click at lower right to open the player settings, then find the Appearance section. Click “Advanced” to display the advanced options. Next to “Rhythm counts,” use the Hide toggle:

In some cases, rhythm counts might already be visible when you first load a slice. That can happen if the slice’s creator decided to display the rhythm counts by default. If you don’t want to see them, you can toggle them off the same way you’d toggle them on.

Availability

You’ll only see the “Rhythm counts” option if:

  1. You’re in any of our paid plans, or
  2. The slice owner has activated the feature
  3. Slice owners, see here for how to enable the feature for anybody viewing your slice.

    How we count rhythms

Each beat, according to the bottom number of the time signature, is marked with a number. Inner subdivisions use a “+”. Further subdivisions use the “1 e + a 2 e + a” tradition.

Rhythm counts are not displayed over notes or rests that don’t align with the strict rhythmic grid — such as tuplets. This is mainly because there’s no clear standard on how to count these.

    Other rhythm count systems

There are several rhythm counting systems (“rhythmic solfege”) in use today, and we’d eventually like to expand our system to allow you to choose your preferred way of counting. If you’re interested, get in touch to register your interest.
