Here I will give you different approaches to improvisation over the blues. I systematically go about that, meaning that I start with a very simple technique and then get more and more complex. I use the simple blues form. You can then transfer the system to any other blues or even song.
For a better understanding of what I'm doing here, I give you the functions of the individual tones in relation to the chord being played at the moment underneath the notes. With the Bluescale, this system deviates, because here the chords can be ignored.
The simple blues feature's only dominant-seventh chords.
These consist of: root, major-third, fifth and minor-seventh (flat-seventh).
I use the following terms for these notes: root (1), major third (3), fifth (5), and minor sevenths (b7).
For the minor-third I use "b3", for the diminished fifth (blue-note) "b5" and for the 4th note of the scale logically "4".
As you will notice very quickly, the minor-third played over major-chords sounds very much like blues. That's why I call it the 1. "Blue Note" and the "b5" ("classic Blue-Note") as the 2. "Blue Note".
This way a dominant seventh chord has the following "formula": 1-3-5-b7.
I'm using 7 techniques (steps) here, each of which I demonstrate in an example chorus (1 blues form). If new elements are added to a technique, these are marked in red. In addition, each note's function is labeled.
Included is a pdf with further information in English and German.
