Player and editor improvements, Sept. 19

The Soundslice player and editor continue to get better. Here’s what’s new:

New Appearance toggles: bar numbers, part names, title

We’ve added a few more ways for you to tweak the notation you’re currently working with. In the player settings, the Appearance section has new options:

Click the new “Advanced” button to see the new stuff:

Bar numbers lets you enable bar numbers on every bar or hide them entirely. Previously it was only possible to show them at system start (default) or hide them entirely, and that decision was only available to the slice creator.

Title lets you show or hide the title in the notation. Previously this decision was only available to the slice creator.

Part names lets you show or hide individual part names to the left of each system, or just the first system. Previously this decision was only available to the slice creator.

You can use these options on any music sitewide, not just the slices you’ve created yourself. They’re available for anybody — you don’t have to pay us or even be logged in.

If you are logged in, and auto-saving is active, we’ll auto-save your preference for the specific slice. Next time you view that slice, it’ll remember your preferences.

Now that we have this “Advanced” section of Appearance, we’re planning to add more notation toggles in there. Having them hidden behind “Advanced” gives us flexbility to add some more niche options, without cluttering the main settings. If you have any ideas, drop us a line!

New design for the Layout section

Speaking of the player settings, we’ve done a small redesign to combine the various layout-related options into a single section.

Previously, there were three separate sections: Zoom, Layout and Stave width.

We’ve combined those into a single Layout section. It takes up less space, and we hope it’s more intuitive.

Strictly speaking there’s no new functionality here, just a refinement of the existing interface.

Video position auto-saving

If auto-saving is active, and you’re viewing a slice that has a video, we’ll now remember the video size and position you’ve chosen. No more needing to resize the video as soon as you open a slice!

Faster workflow for adding Vimeo and Wistia videos

In our editor, when you add a Vimeo or Wistia video to one of your slices, the process is much faster and smoother now.

Previously, we would take you to an entirely separate web page, exiting the editor — which was super clunky. Now, you can choose the video directly, without leaving the editor.

Create triplets via explicit selection

In our editor, you can now create a triplet by selecting all of the notes in the triplet. (What a concept!)

Previously, the process was to select the first note of the triplet, then use the “Toggle triplet starting at selection” command. But this made certain types of triplets impossible to enter.

Now, you can explicitly select all the notes within your triplet, then run the command, and it’ll do the right thing.
